Cover screws and healing abutments are essential components in the dental implant process. They are used during the healing phase after implant placement to protect the implant site and promote proper tissue integration.
A cover screw is placed directly onto the implant after it has been positioned in the bone. It seals the implant and protects it from debris and bacteria during the initial healing phase when the gum tissue is sutured over the implant.
Once the implant has integrated with the bone (osseointegration), a healing abutment replaces the cover screw. It extends above the gum line, shaping the soft tissue and creating a proper emergence profile for the final prosthetic restoration.
